FACTS
INSOMNIA is a condition in which one has trouble to either fall asleep or stay asleep. Some people with insomnia may fall asleep easily but wake up too soon. Others may have trouble sleeping and take hours to fall asleep. There are also people with insomnia who have both problems. These result in a poor-quality sleep that often leaves the person feeling tired and devoid of energy throughout the day.
There are two types of INSOMNIA.
The most common type is called SECONDARY INSOMNIA. Secondary means that the insomnia is caused by another problem. Some of those problems are:
- Pain, anxiety, and depression
- Certain illnesses
- Medications that cause insomnia
- Caffeine, alcohol, tobacco or other substances that affect sleep
- Other sleep disorders such as restless leg syndrome
- Poor sleep environment or a change in sleep routines
PRIMARY INSOMNIA is not a side-effect of another problem. It is its own disorder and generally persists for at least one month or longer. Some of the causes of primary insomnia are:
- Major or long-lasting stress and emotional upset
- Travel or other factors that disrupt the sleep routine

- One in 3 adults occasionally has insomnia.
- One in 10 adults has chronic insomnia.
- Insomnia affects women more often than men.
- Insomnia can occur at any age.
- Older adults are more likely to have insomnia than younger people.
- People especially prone to insomnia include those who are:
- Under a lot of stress
- Depressed or who have other emotional distress
- Working at night or having frequent shifts in their work hours
- Traveling long distances with time changes (jet-lag)
