FACTS
A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder. It is a very strong, irrational fear of something that in reality poses little or no actual danger. It accompanies the strong desire to avoid what causes the fear and in some cases completely disables the person with the phobia from normal daily tasks or in social settings. People with phobia(s) often feel; uncontrollable anxiety when exposed to the object of fear, panicky feelings, rapid heartbeat, sweating, avoidance behavior, difficulty breathing and intense anxiety.
Common phobias include:
SPECIFIC PHOBIAS: These include but are not limited to Claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces), animals- particularly spiders, snakes, dogs or mice, Acrophobia (fear of heights) , Pterygophobia (fear of flying), Hydrophobia (fear of water), storms, dentists, injections, tunnels, bridges and many others.
SOCIAL PHOBIA: Social phobia involves a combination of excessive self-consciousness, a fear of public scrutiny or humiliation in common social situations, and a fear of negative evaluation by others.
AGORAPHOBIA (fear of open spaces): Agoraphobia is a fear of being on your own in a place, such as a mall or an elevator or a room full of people, with no easy means of escape if a panic attack should occur.
